Blending Analytics Data for Historic Reporting

Further built an application to import historic UA data into a BigQuery table, and enabled the integration to transfer data from GA4 into BigQuery daily, saving money and time for our client.

Business Challenge

Nothing Bundt Cakes is an online retailer who uses month-over-month and year-over-year reporting to measure the marketing team's progress in driving critical KPIs. With the recent migration from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4, the team needed a way to blend data sources so that the historic KPIs could be pulled from the old reporting API and compared to the new KPIs in GA4.

Solution

Further built an application to import historic UA data into a BigQuery table, and enabled the integration to transfer data from GA4 into BigQuery daily.

To enable comparisons, the team created an application hosted in Cloud Run that generates data models in BigQuery every day when the new Google Analytics 4 data is made available. Visualizations were created in Looker.

Our Google Expertise

Business Impact

The Nothing Bundt Cakes team is able to view month-over-month and year-over-year comparisons in Looker, despite the fact that the data was collected by two separate Analytics tools. Data is updated daily and comparisons are automatically applied in Looker. The team was also able to optimize queries to reduce the BigQuery cost by more than 90% in month 3 from what was invoiced in month 1.

“This project allows us to maintain uninterrupted reportingon critical business metrics between new and old Analyticssystems in a way that is efficient and cost effective.”
